Barclays Premier League: Wigan Athletic 1-0 Liverpool FC

It is with a terribly heavy heart that I say that Liverpool, for the first time since I’ve started blogging, lost and terribly so, outclassed by a Wigan team which looked like they should be playing in the Champions League this season.

It wasn’t so much Wigan’s superior style of play rather than it was Liverpool’s inability to step up the level of our game. Seriously, it looked like Rafa Benitez was more than just pissed at the end of the game yesterday.

It all came down to the fact that two of our best players were terrible on the night. Torres was rubbish (when will you ever hear that?) and Gerrard looked like he left his captain’s spirit back at Wembley. This is three points lost against a team which we have never lost to before and it means that we stay 6th in the table, with our other top 4 rivals having a few games in hand over us, with only 9 games to go and 2 of which happen to be against Manchester United and Chelsea.

Europe League next vs Lille away, a team which I certainly don’t know much about. But with performances like this one, it’s going to be a sad, sad affair. Let’s just hope Johnson starts the next game and Mascherano comes back to the center of the midfield, where he belongs.

YNWA.
